Well-bought: Black on Red ‘91 Coupe – $2600.

From the “How Low Can You Go” department, this sale completed about a year and a half ago, and I thought it might be interesting to contrast the previous selling environment to the current one.

Everybody knows that fourth-generation Corvettes are some of the biggest sports car bargains and that they continue to be. Nevertheless, this seemed like a pretty good deal for a potential buyer of this mildly re-designed model from ’91.

The seller was very light on information – scant details were revealed about the history, mileage, and condition of the car. But he did at least provide some pictures that showed a mostly original example (except for headers and an axle-back exhaust). It even still had the original saw blade wheels. The seller claimed that it was an overall good care that ran great.

From the pictures provided, the paint didn’t look too bad. There was, however, a “minor crack” on the door and the seller admitted that although it had a cover on most of the time, it needed a little cleanup after sitting for a while. The ‘91 models had the excellent LT1 engine with 300 hp. The much-maligned opti-spark ignition system was actually reliable and worked quite well as long as the water pump above it didn’t leak and create moisture inside the unit.

The interior looked better than you would expect for a $2600. car. Red is a nice contrast to the black exterior. The seller revealed that the dash had an issue with the LCD readout and needed repair. (This is the digital module that displays speed, fuel level, miles, and some other information.) The analog speedometer, tachometer, and other gauges were working.

If a Carfax, visual inspection, and test drive didn’t reveal any serious issues, it certainly didn’t seem like a buyer would be going very far out on a limb with this purchase. If you were so inclined, couldn’t this car have been parted out for more than $2600.00?

But if you only had a few thousand dollars to spend on a summer toy to get it into safe/reliable driving condition, there weren’t many other sports cars that you could pick up at this price. And that brings us back to the original point of this post: do you think you could find a decent C4 for this asking price these days?
